This Week's GA4 Insight: Check Your Unassigned Traffic
The most overlooked metric in GA4 might be hiding in your Traffic Acquisition report.
Open GA4 and take a look at your Traffic Acquisition report this week.
If you see a significant amount of traffic attributed to "Unassigned," it's usually a sign that something needs attention.
Common causes include:
Missing or incorrect UTM parameters
Custom campaign tagging that doesn't follow Google's rules
Misconfigured integrations
Traffic sources that GA4 can't classify properly
A growing "Unassigned" bucket can make it difficult to understand which campaigns are actually driving results.
Here's a simple rule of thumb:
Less than 5% Unassigned: Generally OK
5–10%: Worth investigating
More than 10%: Prioritize fixing it
Most teams spend time building dashboards before ensuring their acquisition data is trustworthy.
Takeaway: If you don't know where your traffic came from, you can't confidently decide where to invest your marketing budget.
See you next week with another GA4 insight.
